Camargue and Arles: wonderful!

lilyflamingo.JPGnordpinusa.JPGnordpinus2.JPGnordpinus1.JPGJust back from a two day break in the Camargue staying at Arles over night. Wonderful! We were the last car on the chain ferry at Salin-de-Giraud; we walked alongside hundreds of flamingos at the Etang du Fangassier; Saw white horses and bulls; Lily had  her second med swim of the year at the busy seaside resort of Saintes-Marie-de-la- Mer before we headed for Arles where we stayed at the legendary Grand Hotel Nord Pinus on the Place du Forum in the old town centre. Dinner at Au Brin de Thym….good squid in a Rouille sauce …washed down with a respectable Les Baux rose. Our verdict on the Nord Pinus? Lovely decor, relaxed , comfortable room and bathroom, fresh squeezed orange at breakfast,  steeped in 20th.c Provencal history…former guests from Cocteau to Graham Greene…but for the money (lots) they do skimp a bit: one person on the desk has to do everything; in the evening I had to explain to the doorman/barman how to make a Manhattan ( did F.Scott Fitzgerald have the same problem, I think not); confiture in those little catering pots…not good; and dont expect to find a loo in this hotel other than in your room…inconvenient when you’ve just checked out! Could try a little harder without losing their boutique appeal in my view. If you want to book their site is at www.nord-pinus.com
